Crops For Green Manure
The most important green-manure crops in this country are hairy vetch, Austrian winter peas, rye, crimson clover, lupines, crotalaria, sweetclover, and alfalfa. Buckwheat and other crops are used in limited areas.

Other crops used in this region include crotalaria, lespedeza, cowpeas, soybeans, lupines, kudzu, and velvetbeans. Crotalaria appears to be better adapted to soils of low fertility, particularly sandy oils, than are most other crops. Lespedeza as a cover crop has been effective in reducing erosion in North Carolina.
In the Corn Belt, clover, sweetclover, and cowpeas have been tried as green-manure crops in the semiarid regions of the western states. Their use is seldom beneficial in such regions.
Sesbania is a popular green-manure crop on irrigated lands of the Southwest. In the Humid or irrigated regions of the Pacific Coast states, vetches, Ladino clover, burclover, sourclover field peas, rye, and other crops are used for green-manure and winter-cover crops.
On a dry-matter basis, Austrian winter peas, hairy vetch, and alfalfa green manures contain 3 to 4 per cent nitrogen, other legumes 2 to 3.5 per cent, and cereal plants and ryegrass 1.2 to 1.4 per cent. The average availability of nitrogen in green-manure material harvested, applied to other lands, and turned under, is about 50 to 80 per cent.
