Hay is by far the most valuable harvested forage because it does not deteriorate appreciably in storage, it can be shipped and marketed, and it provides a large intake of dry-matter nutrients for livestock.
Quality in hay really means nutritive value. The important physical factors that can be gauged in a practical way are color, leafiness, maturity of plants when cut , amount of foreign material, condition, and texture. These factors are generally correlated with palatability as well as chemical composition.
